Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Many oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, using either conscious sedation or local anesthesia. These include extraction of impacted teeth, placement of dental implants and intra-oral procedures involving soft tissue.

More invasive and complex operations to correct congenital deformities, severe facial trauma or disease are carried out under general anesthesia.

The following are some of the conditions that oral and maxillofacial surgeons diagnose and treat:

• Complex extractions for impacted teeth (Dentoalveolar surgery)
• Bone grafting
• Dental implant surgery
• Corrective jaw surgery (Orthognathic)
• Cyst removal
• Surgical orthodontics
• Pathological conditions of the head and neck
• Facial trauma surgery (fractures of the cheek, jaw, nose, eye socket and skull)
• Oral, head and neck cancers
• Traumatic dental injury repair
• Cleft lip and palate repair and other congenital malformations
• Temporomandibular joint surgery
• Salivary gland disease
• Correction of Maxillofacial Skeletal Defects
• Reconstructive surgery using micro-surgical technique
• Surgery for obstructive sleep apnea

Orthognathic and craniofacial surgery can significantly improve the appearance and functionality of patients born with a cleft palate or other skeletal defects. Using our breadth of technical expertise and surgical skills, our surgeons are adept at repairing and restructuring both hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Training

This dental specialty involves rigorous academics, starting with four years of dental school followed by an additional four years in surgical training as residents. The hospital-based residency program is highly competitive, and focuses on techniques of anesthesia administration, general surgery and emergency medicine. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are trained to administer general anesthesia and all levels of sedation.

Graduates can choose to pursue a 1 or 2-year fellowship for advanced training in craniofacial surgery, cosmetic facial surgery, cancer of the head and neck, or cranio-maxillofacial trauma (injury to the soft and hard tissue of the face, neck and head.)

Patients may be referred to an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon at our Feasterville, PA clinic by general practitioners, orthodontists or general dentists. To optimize patient outcome in more complex cases, we may collaborate with ear nose and throat specialists, orthodontists, plastic surgeons and other specialists as part of a multidisciplinary team.
