Ridge Augmentation

Dr. Salin, Dr. Weiner, Dr. Semanoff, and Dr. Nack perform ridge augmentation in addition to tooth extraction or dental implant treatment. Contact our practice in Feasterville, Newtown, or Abington, PA, to receive your custom oral surgery treatment plan.

What Is Ridge Augmentation?

Ridge augmentation is a type of bone grafting procedure that restores shape and strength to the alveolar ridge, which is the portion of jaw bone that surrounds teeth roots. After a tooth is extracted or falls out, the alveolar ridge will begin to deteriorate due to a lack of stimulation. Ridge augmentation rebuilds this ridge, creating beautiful aesthetic results and a healthier foundation for dental implants.

The jaw bone can deteriorate due to a number of reasons, such as:

  • Long-term denture use
  • Periodontitis
  • Tooth extraction or tooth loss
  • Oral infection
  • Facial trauma or injury
  • Birth defects or congenital disorders
  • Some drugs for osteoporosis and cancer, which can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw

Although the reason for bone loss can vary, bone grafting can be used in nearly all of these circumstances to improve oral health and rebuild facial structures.

How Is Ridge Augmentation Performed?

During your first visit to Innovative Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we will take 3D scans of your mouth and face to assess the health of your facial bones and soft tissues. Your oral surgeon will create your custom treatment plan and determine if ridge augmentation is necessary. We will walk you through the steps of your treatment, answer your questions, and discuss your anesthesia options to ensure a comfortable surgical experience.

There are several techniques we can use when performing ridge augmentation:

  • Soft tissue augmentation, or gum grafts
  • Block grafts, which use the patient’s own bone
  • Guided bone regeneration, which provides space for new bone using barrier membranes

During ridge augmentation surgery, your surgeon will make an incision in the gum and carefully pull it back to reveal the area that needs a graft. Your surgeon will fill the area with the chosen material, cover it with a membrane, and close the incision. Over the next few months, new bone tissue will heal around the graft, resulting in a healthier, stronger alveolar ridge.
