What Is Jaw Augmentation?

Jaw augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves inserting a custom jaw implant to improve the contours and shape of the jawline. There are several names for this procedure, including jaw implants or jaw contouring. When implants are inserted on the chin, this is known as chin augmentation or chin implant surgery. The goal of jaw augmentation is to refine and improve the bone contour of the jawline with a fitted implant to increase confidence and facial aesthetics.

Should I Consider a Jaw Implant?

When performed by a trained and qualified surgical professional, like our board-certified surgeons at Innovative Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, undergoing jaw augmentation or chin implant surgery will produce life-changing results and a permanent solution to a weak jawline or recessed chin.

Jaw augmentation may be right for you if:

  • You have a weak jawline or recessed chin
  • You feel like your facial features are disproportionate
  • You desire more definition in the neck and jawline

The Jaw Implant/Jaw Augmentation Procedure

We will discuss your goals for treatment and determine if jaw implants are right for you during the consultation. Jaw augmentation is an outpatient procedure and takes about one hour or less to complete. If necessary, we will take 3D scans of your jaws and face to get a clearer view of your bone and facial structure. We offer many types of anesthesia, and typically use general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation for this procedure.

During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision inside the mouth or under the chin to reduce visible scarring. Your surgeon will make room for the implant and insert it along the jaw or chin, then close the incision with sutures.

After jaw implant surgery, you will see results immediately, though the surgical area may be swollen for at least a week. You can manage post-operative swelling, bruising, or discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses. We will provide you with instructions to follow to expedite your recovery. Expect to return to our office about one week after the procedure to have stitches removed (if dissolvable sutures were not used) and for your surgeon to evaluate your healing.

Local Anesthesia

Administered through a syringe, a local anesthetic numbs only the surgical site. The effects can last up to several hours. We often pair local anesthesia with another type of anesthesia or sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask. It provides mild sedation and pain relief and is often combined with other options, such as oral sedation, for optimal effect.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia will render you totally unconscious. This option is reserved for complex surgeries such as orthognathic surgery or facial reconstruction.

Intravenous (IV) Anesthesia

Your surgeon will inject the sedative into the vein, which will render you into a semi-conscious state. Also called twilight sedation or twilight dentistry, this option is ideal for extensive procedures or highly anxious patients.
