Extreme Bone Loss and Zygomatic Implants

Dental implants are the treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth. They are anchored directly in the jawbone, offering a long-lasting, convenient, and more aesthetically appealing alternative to dentures. However, many patients with missing teeth are told they cannot receive dental implants due to severe bone loss of the jaw. It’s true that dental implants do need sufficient bone mass to properly anchor them; however, a newer generation of implants requires far less bone mass than traditional implants. The oral and maxillofacial surgeons at Innovative Implant and Oral Surgery are pleased to offer these groundbreaking zygomatic implants to our patients who are seeking a smile restoration.

What exactly are zygomatic implants?

The name of zygomatic implants is derived from the cheekbone, also known as the zygomatic bone. The zygomatic bone is typically far denser than the maxillary bone, where traditional dental implants may be placed. In order to place implants in the zygomatic bone, these newer implants are developed to be significantly longer than traditional implants. However, they will look exactly the same in your smile, as only the crown (white part) will be visible above the gum line.

Are you a good candidate for zygomatic implants?

Only an oral and maxillofacial surgeon can determine whether zygomatic implants are right for you. You’ll need to have a thorough exam, including x-rays. In general, zygomatic implants are used for patients with missing teeth in the upper jaw. You’ll also need to meet the general eligibility criteria for all dental implant patients. For example, you’ll need to quit smoking, if applicable, as smoking significantly increases the risk of both implant failure and complications from the implant placement surgery. Be sure to provide your full medical history to your oral surgeon when discussing whether zygomatic implants are right for you.

What are the benefits of zygomatic implants?

The primary perk of choosing zygomatic implants is that they allow patients to receive dental implants even if they were previously told they lacked sufficient bone mass for these restorations. Before zygomatic implants were developed, patients with insufficient jawbone mass had to undergo a bone grafting procedure to build up the bone mass so that it could properly anchor implants. Bone grafting requires a lengthy healing process afterward, which delays the placement of the implants. Plus, it meant patients had to undergo at least a couple of surgeries.

With zygomatic implants, there is no need for a bone grafting procedure, as the implants are anchored securely in the zygomatic bone. In addition, patients can enjoy same-day implants. This means they can receive the full restoration during the same procedure, instead of having the implant placed, waiting for the bone to fuse to the post, and then completing the restoration.
