Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants provide a unique opportunity for patients who have upper jaw bone loss to receive fully functioning dental implants. Whereas traditional dental implants are inserted into the jaw bone, zygomatic implants are inserted into the zygoma, or cheek bone. At Innovative Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, Dr. SalinDr. WeinerDr. Semanoff, and Dr. Nack use state-of-the-art 3D imaging and the latest technological advancements in implant dentistry, including zygomatic implants. With these advanced techniques, we can place dental implants for patients who were previously told they do not qualify for implants.

If you have previously been told you do not qualify for dental implants, we invite you to contact our practice. Our surgeons have helped many patients receive healthy, long-lasting dental implants, even in cases of severe jaw bone atrophy. We offer zygomatic implants in Feasterville, Newtown, and Abington, PA.

How Does a Zygomatic Implant Work?

Just like a traditional dental implant, zygomatic implants replicate the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. What makes zygomatic implants unique is that they have a longer post than traditional implants and are inserted into the cheek bone rather than the jaw bone. Once secured in the dense cheek bone, these implants provide the same stability and function as an implant embedded into the jaw.

Zygomatic dental implants can only be placed in the upper arch and are a great option for patients who have had failed dental implants, failed bone grafting treatment, or who suffer from severe jaw bone deterioration. There is no bone grafting required, so the overall treatment time with zygomatic implants is greatly reduced.

The Benefits of Zygomatic Implants

In addition to helping make dental implants an option for more people, zygomatic implants provide numerous benefits, including:

1
Less invasive than bone grafting or sinus lift procedures
2
Single-stage implants means only one surgical procedure is required
3
Same-day results—you will leave our office wearing a temporary crown
4
More options for patients who cannot receive traditional implants
5
Excellent alternative to removable dentures
6
Take pride in your smile again

Zygomatic Dental Implant Procedure

This process is similar to the process for a traditional dental implant. Your surgeon will use 3D scans to create your personalized treatment plan and walk you through the steps of your restoration. We perform this surgery using IV anesthesia, which allows you to rest comfortably during implant placement.

During surgery, your oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue and insert the zygomatic implant. These implants are strategically placed near the bicuspid teeth, and your surgeon uses great precision to avoid nerves or other facial structures. We will attach a temporary restoration, immediately restoring your smile’s aesthetics. After the implants have fused with the cheek bone, your dentist will place the final custom-made crown.

What Is a Pterygoid Implant?

Pterygoid implants function just like traditional dental implants, except they are inserted into the pterygoid plate near the center of the skull. We may recommend pterygoid implants to patients who cannot receive traditional or zygomatic implants, but who still desire a fixed tooth replacement solution in the upper jaw. During your consultation, we will explore all of your restoration options and determine the right choice for your needs.
