Anxiety-Free Sedation Dentistry in Buck’s County
Dental phobia affects an estimated 30 percent of the population, preventing many from getting the routine care they urgently need. Whether you had a bad dental experience as a child, are terrified of needles, or have an incredibly low pain threshold, sedation dentistry allows the most fearful of patients to undergo multiple treatments in complete safety and comfort.
There are several sedation dentistry techniques that may benefit patients who:
- Have extreme dental anxiety
- Have strong gag reflexes
- Have difficulty sitting still for long periods of time
- Have very sensitive teeth
- Have a low tolerance for pain
- Have special needs
- Have emotional or physical disabilities
- Have to undergo multiple, complex dental procedures
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is designed to calm the fear and anxiety that patients sometimes associate with dental treatments. Our oral surgeons can work more efficiently and for longer periods of time when you are completely relaxed and unburdened with worry or fear of pain. There are various techniques used to sedate patients, ranging from nitrous oxide to IV sedation, which can be a tremendous help to anyone suffers from dental phobias.
The type of sedation administered will depend on factors such as your age, health, medical history, anxiety level and the type and length of procedures being performed.
Advantages of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry offered at Innovative Implant and Oral Surgery has numerous benefits. One of the key advantages of sedation is that it provides an amnesic effect, so that patients have no memory of the procedure. With sedation dentistry, a complicated 2-hour procedure will seemingly pass by in an instant.
Sedation dentistry puts you in a dream-like, euphoric state throughout the entire treatment. You feel no pain but are still awake enough to answer questions. This differs from general anesthesia, where the patient is totally unconscious.
Additional benefits conferred by sedation dentistry:
- Procedures seem shorter – no sense of time while under sedation
- Anxiety and fear dissipate quickly
- Completely relaxed with no pain or discomfort
- Dulled sense of smell, taste and sound during treatment
- Very little memory or recollection of the dental treatment
With sedation dentistry, anxious patients can get the smile makeover they’ve always dreamed of or essential care they need without fear, worry or discomfort. While sedation is frequently used for lengthy or complex dental procedures, it’s an effective solution for those who simply dread the thought of a simple teeth cleaning.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Sedatives may be administered orally, intravenously, or through inhalation for a more soothing and stress-free dental experience. Depending on the technique used, patients may be fully awake but relaxed, or in a deeper state of sedation where you are less aware of your surroundings.
Our office provides several types of sedation dentistry, including:
- Nitrous Oxide – Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is extremely effective for reducing anxiety during a wide variety of minor dental treatments. Inhalation of nitrous oxide provides a mild sedative effect and a general sense of wellbeing. It may be combined with a prescribed relaxant medication (oral sedation) for optimal effect.
- Intravenous Sedation– A deeper form of sedation, this technique may be recommended for very phobic patients, or those who need extensive procedures in one sitting. This method is sometimes known as “twilight sedation,” as patients are conscious but deeply relaxed. Once the sedative is injected into the vein, the effect is instant. IV sedation leaves patients feeling calm and happy with virtually no memory of the procedure. As with oral sedation, it’s important to arrange a ride home after your procedure.
- Oral Sedation – Another form of mild sedation that eases trepidation in anxious patients. Prescription sedative pills are taken roughly one hour before the procedure. With oral conscious sedation, we ask that a friend or family member drives you to and from your appointment
