Removing wisdom teeth that are causing discomfort or affecting your bite can bring significant relief and improvement in your oral health. Here, we’ve compiled a list of things to avoid after wisdom tooth extraction to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.
Avoid disturbing the extraction site.
After extraction, a blood clot forms in the tooth socket. This is a natural part of the healing process. Dislodging the clot can expose the underlying nerves and bone, a painful condition called “dry socket.” Touching the surgery site can prevent clots from forming and introduce harmful infection-causing bacteria, so protect it from your fingers, tongue, or toothbrush as it heals.
Skip the straw.
Suction can also dislodge the blood clot that forms at the extraction site. While drinking plenty of fluids is important, don’t drink through a straw. Rinsing too vigorously can also disrupt the healing process. Instead, gently rinse the site with salt water for the first few days after oral surgery.
Stay away from hard-to-chew foods.
Of course, you can eat after dental extraction, but you’ll need to hold off on certain foods like candy, popcorn, and pretzels for up to a week after surgery. Chewing on hard, crunchy, or sticky foods can dislodge blood clots during recovery. Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing, and chew on the opposite side until the wound has healed.
Say no to icy or hot drinks.
Avoid drinks that are too hot or cold, as well as carbonated beverages. Extreme temperatures and fizzy liquids can irritate and inflame sensitive tissue and prevent blood clots from forming.
Refrain from smoking and alcohol.
Puffing on a cigarette is like sucking on a straw. Pulling in air can affect the forming of blood clots and increase the risk of dry sockets. Alcohol can compound or have dangerous interactions with pain medications. If you do smoke or drink alcohol, we recommend waiting at least a week after your procedure.
Don’t underestimate the importance of rest.
Rest is crucial for promoting healing after wisdom tooth removal. Follow your oral surgeon’s guidelines, and don’t rush into physical activity too soon, as it can worsen swelling, bleeding, or pain. Most patients return to school or work 1-3 days after the procedure, but it’s important to listen to your body and take the time you need to rest and recover fully.
