Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to erupt in the back of the mouth. There are typically two in the bottom arch and two in the top arch, although some people develop fewer while others never develop any. These molars often begin developing during the late teens or early twenties, which is the ideal time to have them removed. If left untreated, wisdom teeth can lead to serious oral health complications, such as:

  • Pain
  • Overcrowding
  • Swelling
  • Jaw stiffness
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Infection, which can cause chronic bad breath or the formation of cysts or tumors
  • Dental shifting
  • Bite problems

Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

Before your wisdom teeth procedure, we will take 3D scans of your mouth to assess the size and position of the molars. Your oral surgeon will create a custom surgical plan and discuss your options for anesthesia or sedation. Wisdom teeth removal is often performed using IV anesthesia, which will put you into a semi-conscious state unable to feel pain.

During the procedure, your surgeon will extract erupted wisdom teeth using forceps. To remove impacted wisdom teeth, or those stuck beneath the gums, your surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue to access these molars, then extract them. We will place sutures as necessary and you will rest in our office until the anesthesia wears off and you are ready to go home.

Recovering From Wisdom Teeth Removal

By following your post-operative instructions closely, you can recover quickly and ensure an optimal outcome. Many patients return to work or school 1–3 days after surgery, although it may take up to two weeks for the extraction sites to heal. Here are some tips to aid in your wisdom teeth recovery:

  • Avoid using a straw and excessive spitting, which could dislodge the forming blood clot within the tooth socket and cause a painful condition known as dry socket.
  • Hold an ice pack against the outside of your jaw to manage swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous activities for about a week.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Drink plenty of water and stick to soft foods, like yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies.

If you have questions at any point during your recovery, please call our office. A member of our team will be happy to help.
