The skilled surgeons at Innovative Implant & Oral Surgery are happy to answer all of your questions about the recovery process following wisdom teeth extraction. Depending on your individual case, it may take anywhere from one to two weeks to fully recover, though most patients are back to their normal routine within 5-6 days.

After wisdom teeth removal

After wisdom teeth removal it’s critical to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions, which are designed to minimize discomfort and risk of complications. Many factors will determine your total healing time including your age at the time of extraction, your overall health, severity of the wisdom teeth impaction the surgical technique used, and your commitment to follow home care instruction after the procedure.

You can expect some degree of discomfort, jaw stiffness, swelling and minor bleeding after getting your wisdom teeth pulled. Should you notice severe pain, excessive bleeding or other unusual symptoms, contact Innovative Implant & Oral Surgery as soon as possible.

Wisdom teeth removal recovery timeline

  • Days 1-2:
    • Wisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia.
    • Once fully awake, you can go home with a designated driver.
    • Mild to moderate nausea, throbbing, and minor bleeding are common but manageable with Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or prescribed pain medication.
    • Some patients experience light bruising and swelling around the cheeks and jaw.
    • Use ice packs to reduce swelling, which typically peaks the day after surgery.
    • Plan to rest at home, avoiding physical activity. Refrain from rinsing vigorously, spitting, or using straws. Stay hydrated and stick to soft, protein-rich foods like yogurt and soup.
  • Days 3-4:
    • Swelling may peak, but throbbing will subside into general soreness.
    • Limited jaw opening is normal and temporary.
    • Maintain oral hygiene by gently rinsing with warm salt water or mouthwash, taking care around the healing sites.
    • Continue eating soft, nourishing foods and avoid strenuous activities or bending.
  • Days 5-7:
    • Most swelling, bruising, and soreness should improve.
    • Finish any prescribed antibiotics.
    • Many patients feel ready to resume normal activities, including exercise, and transition to a heartier diet.
    • Sutures will dissolve naturally; it’s normal to see small pieces during rinsing.
    • Contact your oral surgeon if you experience fever, persistent bleeding, or signs of infection.

Tips to speed up post wisdom teeth healing

Every patient is unique, and no two people recover the same after having wisdom teeth pulled. Some will be back to school or work in a few days, while others may stay swollen and sore for weeks. You can help speed up the healing process by following these steps:

  • Rest for at least 3 days.
  • Use ice packs during the first day (20-minute intervals).
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, smoking, and straws.
  • Follow prescribed medications and rinse with warm salt water.
  • Avoid hot foods, nuts, and seeds; eat soft or liquid meals.

Post wisdom teeth removal

While rare, risks like dry socket or infection can occur. Prevent complications by following post-op instructions closely.
